Remote Backup and Restore Tool is a simple but powerful tool to automatically schedule your backups and do the restoration on demand. This Free software offers all the state of the art features available in commercial backup software.

You can use this application to schedule daily/weekly backups of your important files to any of your FTP Accounts. Thus you can have a peace of mind that in case there is any data corruption / damage on your local computer, you can restore all the required data just by click of single button.

If you are moving to some other computer, you can simply backup your data from your old computer and restore on your new computer using Remote Backup Restore Software.

You can even Encrypt and Compress your data thus increasing security and efficiency of the backup.

Remote Backup Restore Application:

Firewall ConfigurationConfigure your Firewall to allow Internet access for RemoteBackupRestore.exe file in your installation directory.

Any Proxy Configuration: None because Desktop Application uses Pre-configured Proxy Information from Internet Explorer settings.

2. Installation

Installation process involves downloading windows compatible installer, running it on your computer to install the program and finally configuring the server parameters.

2.1 Downloading the Software:

2.2 Installing the Software:

After download is complete, just run the downloaded program. After agreeing to the Software License Terms, it will ask for Installation Directory and Desktop Icon option etc.  After installation, it will auto run and brings you to the Server Configuration Screen (see Section 3.3)

2.3 Configuring the Software:

·         After installation, server configuration screen will come up where user has to enter FTP Server Address (e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com), FTP Port (normally 21), FTP Username and Password (same as you use in any other FTP Client to upload files)

·         After entering all information, press “Save” and all the information will be validated and you will return to the main screen.

·         In case of error, you will get the Error message and you can check the info and try again.

3. Backup Operation

3.1 Creating Backup Set

 

First Step in using Remote Backup Restore Program is to create a Full Backup Set comprising all the files and folders which you want to include in the backup.

Click on “Add Files” on the main window (Backup Tab) and you will be taken to Create Backup Set Window.

Click on “Add Backup” button to bring up the Windows Explorer window to choose Files and Folders. Just select the Files/Folders and click “Select” to add them to the backup set.

“Delete Selected” button can be used to delete selected entries in the List Box.

“Clear Backup” will clear out entire Backup Set so you can start afresh.

3.2 Setting up a Backup Schedule

 

Click on “Backup Schedule” on the main window (Backup Tab) and you will be taken to the Backup Schedule window where you can set up the Backup start date and time and Frequency of the backups.

For e.g. if you put in 8/15/2009 as Start Date, 8:01:01 PM as Start Time and Frequency to Daily, it would mean that Backup will occur Daily on or after 8:01 PM on all days on and after 15th August, 2009.

3.3 Backup Settings

 

You can configure all  Backup settings by clicking “Advanced Settings” on the Main Window (Backup Tab)

Here you can configure

·         Name of Backup Folder on the FTP Server where your backups will be stored.

·         Enable / Disable Incremental Backups (see Section 5.1 for details)

·         Enable / Disable Encrypted Backups (see Section 5.2 for details)

·         Enable / Disable Compressed Backups (see Section 5.3 for details)

·         Enter the Maximum no of Threads to use in Backup and Restore Operations.

 

3.4 Doing Backup

 

Backup can occur either

·         As per Schedule set in Backup Schedule window

·         By Manually clicking “Start Backup Now” button on Main window (Backup Tab)

In either case, you will see the real time progress of the Backup operation.

After Backup is finished you will see the Backup Log window which will show all the files backed up in this backup session. See Section 3.5 for more on Backup Log files.

3.5 Viewing Backup Logs

You will see Backup Log window every time after Backup is successfully done. This window will remain on screen for 30 seconds but you can also bring up this window again by clicking “View Log” button in the main window (Backup Tab).

4. Restore Operation

4.1 Creating Restore Set

 

If you need to restore data back to your computer, you can go to the “Restore Tab” on the main window and click on “Add Files” which will bring you to the “Restore from Backup” window.

“Restore from Backup” window will show you the full Restore Set in the form of Expandable Tree in which you can select any no or Files/ Folders to restore.

After selecting all the required Files / Folder, click “Restore Selected File / Folder” which will your selection and return you to the main screen.

4.2 Restore Settings

 

You can configure various Restore settings by clicking “Advanced Settings” in the Main Window (Restore Tab).

You can choose to Restore Selected Files and Folders to

·         Specified Folder on your computer.

·         Original Location (from where it was backed up)

4.3 Doing Restore

 

Now, whenever you are ready to start Restore, just Click on “Start Restore” button on the main window (Restore Tab) and Restoration operation will start.

You will be able to see Restore Progress in the form of Progress Bar.

After Restore operation is finished, you will see “Restore Log” window which will show you all the files that have been restored. See section 4.4 for more on Restore Logs.

4.4 Viewing Restore Logs

 

You will see Restore Log window every time after Restore is successfully done. This window will remain on screen for 30 seconds but you can also bring up this window again by clicking “View Log” in the main window (Restore Tab).

4.5 Restore Set Download

 

From time to time, program will refresh its Restore Set from your FTP account so that in case you remove any backup directly from the server, it gets reflected in the Remote Backup Restore program also.

You may see this window when Program is downloading New Restore Set from the Server.

5. Optional Features

5.1 Incremental Backup

 

You can enable Incremental Backups so that only Newer / Changed Files are uploaded in that Backup operation. This leads to better management of Backup Sets besides decreasing space required for storing the backups.

You can enable “Incremental Backups” by enabling checkbox on the main window (Backup Tab) or by clicking “Advanced Settings” on the main window.

5.2 Encrypted Backup

 

Remote Backup Restore provides option to Encrypt your backups with 256 bit High Grade Encryption before uploading to the server.

You can enable encrypted backups by enabling the “Encryption” checkbox on the main window (Backup Tab). 

Before doing the Encrypted Backups, you should Export and Store the Backup Key in a safe place so that in case you want to install Remote Backup Restore on other computer or during Re-Installation, you can Import the same key into software.

To Export and Import the Encryption Keys, click “Advanced Settings” on the main window (Backup Section) and you will see the “Backup Settings” page from where you can do both export and import of encryption keys.

·         Click “Export Keys to File” button to export Keys and store in a safe and secure place.

·         Click “Import Keys from File” button to Import Keys from previously stored File.

Please Note that Files Encrypted with One Set of Keys can only be decrypted by Same Set of Keys.

 5.3 Compressed Backup

Compressed Backup option compresses all your backup files into one Single Zip file before uploading it to the server. This makes management of regular backups easy besides decreasing space required for storing backups.

You can enable Compressed Backups by enabling “Compression” checkbox on the Main Window (Backup Tab) or in the “Advanced Settings” window.
